I stepped outside my house this afternoon, not really expecting anything good to happen, but then I looked up and saw this:

| Sundog effect over rural Tennessee flyover country on Devil's Night, 10/30/2012. The Western sky around 4:45 p.m. |
Sundogs are atmospheric visual effects caused by light reflection off hexagonal ice crystals in the atmosphere. The reflection off the crystal surfaces as they fall through the atmosphere cause them to assume a vertical orientation, which causes light to reflect horizontally from them. Wikipedia gives a much better explanation than I do. Anyway, it is the first time I've seen this effect, and I was lucky enough to be capable of capturing it on camera. At least something cool happened on Devil's Night. Another thing I'm thankful for is that I live nowhere near Detroit today...

Be nice, but if you can't be nice, be rational. If you can't be rational, be humorous. If you can't be humorous, learn. It'll help you in life.
